Rabies update from Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services: To date this year, five rabid bats have been reported from areas of unincorporated Harris County. One rabid bat was reported from each of zip codes 77389 (NNW Harris County - Creekside Park Area), 77073 (North HC - Westfield Area) and 77015 (East HC - Cloverleaf Area). The last two rabid bats, reported in June and July, were from zip code 77346 (NE HC - Atascocita area). A rabid horse was reported in May of this year in the77484 zip code (Waller Area).
We would like to remind everyone not to handle any bat with their bare hands or allow their pets to contact downed bats. Any contact with a bat involving a human or a pet should be reported immediately to the Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services - Veterinary Public Health Division at 281-999-3191.
